DAVIE · Five days after being booed by angry fans during a draft party at the Dolphins' indoor practice facility for selecting Ohio State receiver Ted Ginn instead of Notre Dame quarterback Brady Quinn in the first round, coach Cam Cameron returned to the scene at Thursday's awards banquet. This time, the audience, mostly consisting of season-ticket holders, current and past players, greeted him with polite applause each time he was introduced.
"This is probably only the second or third time I've been in here, but to be honest with you, after tonight I'm starting to warm up to it a little bit more," Cameron joked in his speech.Dolphins General Manager Randy Mueller, who didn't speak at the draft-day public relations nightmare, also joked about the friendlier greeting."I'm glad to see we have a little more hospitable crowd than the last time we gathered here," Mueller said. "I'd like to thank Coach Cameron for letting me come up here first this time just to make sure everything was all right."The audience also gave warm receptions to injured quarterback Daunte Culpepper, as well as Ginn, quarterback John Beck, a second-round pick, and running back Lorenzo Booker, chosen in the third round, when they were introduced among the 10-deep draft class.Ginn didn't have a protective boot on his sprained left foot Thursday as ESPN.com has reported. However, a source confirmed that the injury, which will keep him out of this weekend's minicamp, is what is known as a midfoot Lisfranc (ligament) sprain and most likely will have to be immobilized next week.Plantation orthopedic surgeon Dr. Richard Linn agreed with Mueller's recent assessment that Ginn, barring any reaggravation of the injury, should be fine by July's training camp."Depending on the severity of the sprain, it probably needs to be immobilized, and by training camp, which would be about six to seven months since the injury occurred, he should be ready," Linn said. "It's not unusual to take this long to heal."According to the American Family Physician Web site, Lisfranc joint injuries "are rare, complex and often misdiagnosed" and can range from mild sprains to fracture dislocation.Cameron thanked wide receiver Chris Chambers for not making any Super Bowl predictions this year, and said it was former Dolphins coach Don Shula who recently drilled into him the value of character and work ethic when building a championship team.
