The Dolphins signed cornerback Derrick Johnson off waivers Wednesday, giving the team depth in the secondary during offseason workouts in the wake of injured cornerback André Goodman's absence.
Johnson, who played five games for two NFL teams last season before breaking his arm, also could compete as a reserve and a special teams contributor.
A sixth-round draft pick by the 49ers in 2005, Johnson, 25, was cut by the team before last season. He then had chances with the Texans and Falcons -- where he mostly played on special teams -- before landing on the injured reserve list for the final five games.
The Dolphins need depth at the position as a result of Goodman's recent shoulder injury that required surgery earlier this week. There is no timetable for Goodman's return, but he could potentially miss the start of training camp in July.
